ARTE is transforming its Smart TV applications as well as those delivered to managed platforms such as Sky, Orange, and Telekom, addressing the growing demand for seamless, large-screen viewing experiences. 

Qvest is developing the software and conducting comprehensive testing to ensure a high-quality user experience. By adopting a scalable and platform-independent approach, ARTE is replacing outdated systems with a unified codebase, enabling cost-efficient and agile adaptation across all major OTT platforms. 

Advanced accessibility features, including customizable audio and subtitles, Magic Remote integration, and Tizen preview tiles, enhance usability, while rigorous QA testing guarantees reliability. This forward-thinking solution supports ARTE’s multilingual audience and sets new standards in broadcasting technology. 

Customer challenge & needs

ARTE, a leading content provider in France and Germany, is facing the challenge of futureproofing its OTT Smart TV applications. Despite significant mobile usage, big-screen media libraries remain the primary channels for TV broadcasters, with their usage continuing to increase steadily.

ARTE needs a highly scalable and platform-agnostic backend and frontend solution for all OTT applications. The customer aims to innovate its Smart TV apps to be more appealing and efficient, competing effectively for viewers' time. The primary goal is to replace legacy applications with a unified codebase, ensuring easier maintenance and streamlined delivery across multiple platforms

Additionally, ARTE requires a solution that can support an international audience, offering services in six different languages.

Our contribution & solution

We are enhancing ARTE's OTT Smart TV experience by using our unified and scalable framework, which ensures seamless delivery of ARTE TV services across all major big-screen platforms and gradually replaces legacy applications for easier maintenance.

The solution involves the initial development of a frontend and middleware to deliver ARTE TV services using one codebase, with modular development for specific platforms. Notable features include: 

  • Advanced player allowing audio and subtitle selection during video playback
  • Magic Remote support for WebOS
  • Tizen Preview tiles 


Quality assurance is a critical component of our project. Based in Hamburg, our QA team utilizes a state-of-the-art TV wall with over 100 different TV models to conduct extensive testing. This rigorous testing process ensures that ARTE's services provide a high-quality and consistent user experience across all devices. Our focus on QA guarantees that the application meets the highest standards of performance and reliability. 

Our comprehensive approach, including development support in sprint processes, feature acceptance, fixes, and live monitoring, aims for a smooth, bug-free launch. This initiative exemplifies how innovative, scalable solutions can future-proof content delivery, resulting in high user engagement and setting a new standard in the broadcasting industry.

The quality control has significantly improved the performance and user experience of the ARTE Mediathek, especially because the app is continuously tested on a wide range of current and older devices.
