Qvest has completely redesigned ZDF‘s streaming platform, setting new standards for an intuitive and personalized viewing experience. The new app reflects the broadcaster’s digital transformation from linear TV to on-demand. Qvest has been a key partner since 2018, contributing to UI/UX design for big-screen devices and developing a platform-agnostic frontend for HbbTV, CTV, and apps like SKY and Fire TV. Another highlight: an optimized metadata structure that enables automated content organization and personalized recommendations.
The digital transformation presents major challenges for broadcasters. Younger audiences are shifting towards streaming services, while traditional TV is losing reach. At the same time, the growing number of smart TV operating systems and set-top boxes is increasing platform fragmentation.
ZDF needed a modern, intuitive, and cross-device platform that efficiently delivers content across HbbTV, CTV, and third-party apps like SKY, Magenta, and Fire TV. A platform-agnostic codebase was essential to ensure flexibility, scalability, and cost-effective adaptation to new systems.
The goal was to develop a modern, future-proof streaming platform that:
Qvest and ZDF created a high-performance, intuitive, and cost-efficient streaming platform, combining technological innovation with strategic execution. It specifically addresses a younger target group. The platform went live without any significant errors - proof of the technical maturity, the high benefit of early involvement in testing and QA processes, the high product quality and the successful implementation in a complex environment.
