Relaunch of the HbbTV app for NTV

The ntv HbbTV app has undergone a comprehensive rebrush to enhance its user experience (UX) and interface (UI) while optimizing ad functionalities. This project, for which ntv commissioned Qvest as the solution provider, involved redesigning the UX/UI, developing a responsive frontend, and integrating advanced ad solutions through RTL's Ad Alliance Tech framework for HbbTV. By validating the new design with user tests and implementing modern technologies, ntv has created a more engaging and user-friendly platform, improving both user satisfaction and ad revenue potential. 

Customer Challenges & Needs

The ntv app, a prominent HbbTV news portal, recognized the need to modernize its platform to stay competitive and meet user expectations. The project aimed to achieve two primary objectives: 

  1. Enhance the User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI): To make the app more intuitive, visually appealing, and engaging for users.
  2. Improve Advertisement Functionalities: To integrate advanced advertisement features that would optimize ad revenue without compromising the user experience. 

Our Contribution & Solution

1. Creation of a New UX Concept 

Qvest Engage collaborated with ntv to develop a new UX concept that focused on user-centric design principles. Key elements included: 

  • Competitive Analysis: Analyzing similar news portals to identify best practices and areas for improvement.
  • Wireframing: Creating wireframes to visualize the new layout and user flow.
  • User Journey Mapping: Mapping out the user journey to ensure a seamless and intuitive experience. 

 

2. Preparation of User Tests with a Prototype 

To validate the new UX concept, a prototype was developed and tested with real users. This phase included: 

  • Prototype Development: Building an interactive prototype that closely resembled the final product.
  • User Testing: ntv conducted usability tests with a diverse group of users to gather feedback on the prototype.
  • Feedback Analysis: Analyzing the feedback to identify pain points and areas for improvement.
  • Iteration: Making necessary adjustments to the prototype based on user feedback. 

 

3. Development of Frontend UI 

With a validated UX concept, the next step was to develop the frontend UI. Key activities in this phase included: 

  • Design System Creation: Developing a design system to ensure consistency across the app.
  • Responsive Design: Ensuring the app was fully responsive and optimized for various screen sizes and devices.
  • Implementation: Coding the frontend UI using modern web technologies to bring the designs to life. 

 

4. Implementation of ntv backend and Ad Alliance Advertisement Framework 

Qvest integrated the ntv backend used by all their applications as well as the state-of-the art Ad Alliance advertisement framework into the ntv app. 

This involved: 

  • ntv Backend Integration: aligning with backend structures and asset formats while meeting the specific requirements of the variety of HbbTV devices.
  • Framework Integration: Integrating the Ad Alliance framework to enable advanced ad targeting and delivery. 

Outcome & Customer Benefits

The enhancements made to the ntv HbbTV app have significantly improved the user experience and interface while optimizing advertisement functionalities. By creating a new UX concept, validating it through user tests, developing a responsive frontend UI, and integrating the Ad Alliance advertisement framework, ntv has successfully created a more engaging and user-friendly platform.
